Often times, we as web 2.0 users, skim over even the most strategically placed ad. Its just seems no matter how hard a publisher tries, they just cant get a high click through rate (CTR), this is especially true on social media, such as Facebook, where CTR rates are as low as .5%. When a click through rate is that low, and CPC is low too it becomes increasingly difficult for a publisher to maintain his or her application properly.
There have been many attempts to integrate advertising in a more interactive manner, but not all have done as well. Some good examples are pandora, in their advertising scheme they change the whole screen style to fit the ad, this definately catches your attention, they get a B-. There are places such as Facebook, that originally displayed banner ads to the left and the bottom of pages, these are the examples that do not work, nobody pays attention to these ads, they get a D-. There are some companies out there trying to change this, zambino promises to be one of those.
This got me thinking lately on the process of advertising for web 2.0. Product-placement, why not? Movies do it! Thats where advertising 2.0 is. If the user can interact meaningfully with the product, and not know they were being advertised to, then this creates a better environment for all.
But who will embrace this new platform? That, I cannot say, already many fortune 50 companies are stepping into the arena, and taking on social media head-on: HP, Microsoft, Chase, and many more. Many times these companies try to create applications that center around their product, sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t as seen with sarah silvermans “I’m F*cking Matt Damon” video.
I\’m fucking Matt Damon
This is a sample of a way a product, in this case a t.v. show, can achieve the viral heights that often times only “grass-roots” creations only achieve.
**side note** maybe they shouldn’t delete that video off youtube next time.
If an advertiser placed their product in an already viral platform, then they could systematically achieve their desired heights of awareness of their product.
Just something to think about. It definitely got my cogs turning. All i can say for now is:
